The Statue of Liberty is definitely NOT an overlooked place in New York, and it makes an appearance in my MatadorTrips article, “What NOT to Do in New York City.” You’ll have to click over to find out why (and what I recommend instead).

And if you take my advice to skip the Statue, you can get a much better view of Liberty here:

Especially don’t visit Lady Liberty when it’s cold out.

But it’s kind of fun to make the trip out to Staten Island with young kids. We had a wonderful afternoon taking public transit to Staten Island with our kids when they were younger. We took the LIRR to the subway, the subway to the ferry, and the ferry to Staten Island. The icing on the cake was a great pizza place not too far from the ferry station. (Now that our kids are older, they’d probably complain the whole time).

I beg to differ with you on the Met. I’ve never been too interested in museums, but the Met has an unbelievably huge collection of just about everything.

Even though it’s so famous etc., I think it’s under appreciated–especially by New Yorkers. I’ve noticed how most people’s eyes glaze over when I tell them I plan to go there.

I’m all for alternative places to visit though–especially in NYC.

I have a good one to add to your list:
The Empire State Building—A total nightmare, especially during Christmas season.

Steve- I second the ESB wholeheartedly. A reader on Matador suggested Top of the Rock at Rockefeller Center instead. I haven’t been, so I can’t recommend, but she said lines/wait were much shorter.
