I think it's a good reminder that while the US and Europe have already gone through their bloody struggles for independence-- Mexico, Latin America and even part of South America are still struggling. It's easy to tsk-tsk this as an outsider, but only 60 years ago we were in the middle of WWII, which was massively violent and senseless and on such a larger scale. It's part of the process, but we tend to forget our own history, "glorifying" WWII (not to mention all the other crap the US has done in the intervening years). The only difference is the in the US we go to other people's countries to fight, never at home. Hi Julie,

Everywhere has so many problems, I think, but what's important to know about Mexico (and many other Latin American countries) is that they're shaking off centuries of economic and social oppression and instability and violence is an all but inevitable result.
